Comparing the poems Neutral Tones and AbsenceBoth the poems Neutral Tones by Thomas venturous and Absence byElizabeth Jennings mention and describe the poets feelings aboutlosing their partners. purge though the general theme, the loss oflove, is the same, many features such as tone, imagery, language andrhyme scheme differ from each other.Hardy emphasises more on his feelings towards his kick in up. He doesntactually mention how he feels, but instead, the imagery he uses andthe way he describes his ex-girlfriend shows that he feels broken andangry. The tone in this poem is actually solemn and dull, though it isquite strong in some areas like The smile on your mouth was thedeadest thing and your face, and the God-curst sun grayish leaves.Hardy alike got more vigorous and frustrated towards the end of thepoem. In Jenningss poem, the tone is much different. Unlike Hardy,she describes her environs and loneliness, not how her partnerlooks like. Jenningss poem builds up from a hush up tone to an irritatedone. The first stanza of Absence describes her surroundings, thesecond, how she is alone and in the third, how her loneliness affectsher. The last stanza is the fiercest, much more vigorous compared tothe first stanza. For under all the gentleness thither came anearthquake tremor The second stanza of her poem is like the balancebetween the first and last stanza. This stanza links her cheerfulimages to her exasperation. Singing an ecstasy I could not share,played cunning in my thoughts Jenningss poem is also more factualas she talks more about the scenery around her - The fountainssprayed their usual steady kelvin. The tone in this poem is steady, andher offense builds gradual... ...e landscape, colours, andfacial features to convey his heart brokenness. I liked the way Hardychose an aggravated tone for his poem and how he has developed ittowards the end to describe his girlfriends face. From his poem, Icould actually feel Hardys devastation because he even brought in thebitter side of nature to enhance his feelings. Hardy also had adramatic ending where he used the alliteration wrings with wrongs. Ialso liked the way Hardy had combined all his anger and problems andmerged them into his ex-girlfriends face. I think Hardy wassuccessful in victimization imagery by describing the surroundings in thebeginning of the poem and concluding with the surroundings as well.Hardys choice of language was also appropriate to describe hisemotions. All in all, I think Hardy was very successful in using vividimagery to portray his feelings.
